Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced on Friday the signing of infielder Josh Mazzola to a contract for the 2014 season.

Mazzola, 27, has claimed the Goldeyes Budweiser MVP award in each of his first two seasons with the team. He saw action in 100 games for the Goldeyes last season, hitting .293 with a team leading 16 home runs and 64 RBI. Defensively, he moved to shortstop midway through last season and appeared in 51 games at short, despite never playing the position previously in his career. He also saw action at first base, third base, right field and centre field.

"He's been super productive for us for the two seasons that we've had him and I absolutely love his versatility, both offensively and defensively," Forney said. "I am not sure there are many players in this league that could play every position on the field, with the exception of catcher."

During the past two seasons, Mazzola has played in 198 games for the Goldeyes. He has a .300 career batting average with the Fish, while hitting 34 home runs and driving in 138 runs.

Prior to coming in Winnipeg, Mazzola spent three seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization, after signing with the Giants as a free agent following his collegiate career at Missouri State.

The Goldeyes now have five players signed for the 2014 season, including three pitchers and two position players.
