Vernon Wells' stay with the New York Yankees appears to be over after just one season with the team.

The Yankees have designated the 35-year-old for assignment. Wells will now be placed on waivers and if unclaimed, the Yankees will have ten days to trade, release or assign the veteran outfielder to the minor leagues.

Wells posted a .233 average with 11 home runs and 50 RBI in 130 games with the Yankees last season.

Wells is entering the final season of a seven-year, $126 million contract. He signed the deal in 2008 while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Wells was traded to the Los Angeles Angels prior to the 2011 season and dealt from Los Angeles to the Yankees after the 2012 season.

Wells reacted to the move via Twitter on Friday.

"Thank you @Yankees for the opportunity to be a part of such a storied franchise. #Blessed #NextChapter"
