SEOUL, South Korea -- Canada will play for gold at the under-18 world baseball championships for the first time in 21 years.

The Canadians secured a spot in Saturday's final based on tournament standings and possible tiebreaking formulas.

Canada, which is scheduled to play the hosts early Friday, can finish no worse than second place in Round 2 standings. A win against South Korea would give Canada a first-place finish and home team designation in the final against either Japan or the U.S.

Canada is 3-1 with wins over Japan, U.S. and Colombia, and a loss against Taiwan.

The last appearance for Canada in the final came in 1991 when a team led by Stubby Clapp of Windsor, Ont., and Jason Dickson of Miramichi, N.B., defeated Taiwan 5-2 in Brandon, Man.

It was Canada's only gold medal at the event. The Canadians won bronze in 1983, 1987, 1997 and 2006.
