Pavan, Bansley advance to playoffs at beach volleyball worlds

Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Toronto are headed to the knockout round at the FIVB World Championships in beach volleyball.STARE JABLONKI, Poland -- Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Toronto are headed to the knockout round at the FIVB World Championships in beach volleyball.

The first-season pair defeated Mariafe Artacho and Jessyka Nqauamo of Australia in their third and final round robin match 21-12, 17-21, 15-7. Pavan and Bansley, seeded 42nd, finished second in Group G with a 2-1 record to automatically advance to the round of 32.

Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto went 0-3 in round robin play and did not advance.

In men's play, Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., evened their record at 1-1 to stay in contention. They defeated Sebastian Fuchs and Thomas Kaczmarek of Germany 21-18, 21-10. Their third match is Thursday.
