MONTREAL -- Canada has received a first-round bye into the 2010 Davis Cup for the first time since 2006.
The Canadian team will travel to Colombia for the Americas Zone Group 1 second-round tie May 7-9, 2010. The winning country moves on to playoff in September with a chance to compete in the elite World Group for 2011.
"Our objective for 2010 will be to make it to the World Group and with our bye, we'll need to win two ties to achieve it," said Davis Cup team captain Martin Laurendeau. "We will now be heading to Colombia in May, and they are a very good team who will make a tough opponent.
"Our preparation will be key for us to go get that win on the road."
Canada and Colombia have met eight times in Davis Cup action with Canada holding a 5-3 advantage. The Canadians have been victorious in four of the past five ties between the two countries including a 5-0 sweep the last time they faced off in 2007.
In 2009, Canada was defeated by Ecuador 3-2 in Toronto in the Americas Zone Group 1 opening round, but went on to defeat Peru 3-2 in a zonal playoff to remain in Americas Zone Group 1 for 2010.
