QUEBEC -- Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak continued her successful run at the US$220,000 Bell Challenge WTA tennis event, teaming with American Bethanie Mattek-Sands to advance to the second round of the doubles draw Wednesday.
Wozniak and Mattek-Sands defeated Jill Craybas of the United States and Liga Dekmeijere of Latvia 6-2, 7-6(5).
The doubles win came a day after Wozniak beat Italian Corinna Dentoni 6-2, 6-0 in just 43 minutes in her first-round singles match. The native of Blainville, Que., will face Russia's Regina Kulicova Thursday evening.
Elsewehre, Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., and American partner Laura Granville beat Monique Adamczak of Australia and Shenay Perry of the United States 3-6, 7-5, 12-10.
After advancing to the second round in doubles at the U.S. Open two weeks ago, Pelletier improved to a career-best No. 75 in the world women's doubles ranking.
Rebecca Marino of Vancouver and Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., were defeated 7-5, 6-1 by Melinda Czink of Hungary and Natalie Grandin of South Africa.
Marino also struggled in singles action, falling 6-2, 6-3 to eighth seed Julia Goerges of Germany.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Nadia Petrova of Russia defeated Madison Brengle of the United States, 6-3, 6-2. Fifth seed Melinda Czink of Hungary beat Severine Bremond Beltrame of France, 6-4, 6-3. And Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia upset sixth seed Jill Craybas of the U.S., 7-5, 6-2.
