Moscow, Russia (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 and reigning Moscow champion Jelena Jankovic of Serbia landed in the quarterfinals, while top- seeded and 2008 runner-up Vera Zvonareva was a second-round upset victim Thursday at the $1 million Kremlin Cup.
The second-seeded Jankovic advanced with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Czech Lucie Safarova, while Zvonareva was surprisingly whipped by Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova 6-0, 6-2 at Olympic Stadium. Jankovic defeated Zvonareva in last year's finale here.
Zvonareva's loss on Thursday left Jankovic with the eighth and final spot at next week's season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Qatar.
"I was really happy when I heard that I'd made it to Doha," Jankovic said.
Another seeded victor on Day 4 was No. 8 Francesca Schiavone, as the Italian veteran handled Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-2, 7-5.
In other second-round action, Russian Vera Dushevina overcame Hungarian Agnes Szavay 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, Russian Alisa Kleybanova drilled qualifier and compatriot Evgeniya Rodina 6-1, 6-2 and Russian glamour girl Maria Kirilenko dumped Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4, 6-3.
Friday's quarterfinals will pit Jankovic against Kleybanova, Schiavone versus Kirilenko, Belarus' Olga Govortsova against Dushevina and Pironkova versus Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko.
This week's winner will claim $157,427.
