Two-time champ Karlovic exits Eastbourne

Eastbourne, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Ivo Karlovic, a two-time champion at the Wimbledon tune-up in Eastbourne, was eliminated in the first round of the 2014 tournament on Monday.

Frenchman Jeremy Chardy knocked out the big-serving Croat with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Karlovic, this year's fifth seed, had won the tournament in both 2007 and 2008 when it was based in Nottingham.

Sixth-seeded Gilles Simon of France, last year's runner-up, advanced with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Aussie qualifier Chris Guccione, while eighth-seeded Federico Delbonis of Argentina was upended by Slovakia's Martin Klizan, 6-4, 6-4.

Other winners Monday included Australia's Bernard Tomic, American Sam Querrey, German qualifier Tobias Kamke and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.

Tomic beat Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev in straight sets and will next play top-seeded Richard Gasquet of France, while Querrey toppled British wild card Kyle Edmund to set up a second-round match with second-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Kamke also sent a British wild card home with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Daniel Evans and will next take on third seed and defending champion Feliciano Lopez of Spain. Istomin went the distance against Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin and will play fourth-seeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

All four top seeds were given byes into the second round.
