GAME 13, APRIL 11: JAYS AT ORIOLES

RESULT: 5-3 loss (Jays win series 2-1)

RECORD: 8-5

STREAK: L1

1. One of the Jays’ off-season outfield additions is off to a good start and his name is not Randal Grichuk, who suffered through another oh-fer to drop his average to .077. Curtis Granderson, however, picked up another base hit out of the leadoff spot, and the 37-year-old has now hit safely in seven of the nine games he’s started.

2. Marco Estrada cruised through three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing back-to-back doubles to Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop to start the inning. After giving up three runs in that frame, things unravelled for Estrada in the fifth inning, as the O’s went double-walk-single-single to make it 4-1 and end Estrada’s night with the bases still loaded and nobody out. Estrada gave up six hits, walked three, and struck out five. He’ll take his 4.24 ERA to the mound again next Tuesday at home against the Kansas City Royals, a team currently sporting the lowest-scoring offence in baseball.

3. Estrada’s ERA would be much worse if it wasn’t for Danny Barnes, who cleaned up the bases loaded mess in the fifth with relative ease, striking out Adam Jones and Pedro Alvarez before getting Chris Davis to send a hard hit ball (102.5 m.p.h.) into Kevin Pillar’s glove.

4. Devon Travis, who got the night off alongside Russell Martin and Josh Donaldson, was called on to pinch hit for Gift Ngoepe in the ninth inning and flied out to left field. Travis is still hitting .500 as a pinch hitter in his career (2-for-4). In case you’re wondering, Donaldson is 2-for-10 as a pinch hitter, both singles.
