Recap:

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

New Jersey Devils forward Jaromir Jagr is like a fine wine that seems to get better with age (see last night’s 2-1 overtime goal vs. the Los Angeles Kings) Jagr may go down as one of the top ten players to play in the NHL once he retires. Jagr has always been very passionate about hockey & is continually looking for ways to improve his craft. Maple Leafs forwards James van Riemsdyk & Phil Kessel should be “locks” to make Team USA especially considering the fact that both players have tremendous chemistry. Former Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski makes his long awaited return to Toronto on Saturday & will definitely be looking to prove his critics wrong. Goaltender Jonathan Bernier struggled during last night’s 4-2 loss vs. the Nashville Predators however Toronto’s play on special teams was absolutely horrendous. Pierre’s Grey Cup Prediction: Take the Saskatchewan Roughriders

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger – NHL Insider

The Nashville Predators continued to build off their recent momentum en route to a 4-2 victory over the Maple Leafs last night. Nashville plays in the ultra competitive Western Conference & proved once again why they are such a formidable opponent. The Predators are a very hard working team that relies on a “scoring by committee” approach due to their lack of star power at the forward position. Hopefully last night’s loss serves as a wakeup call otherwise Toronto will be in for a very long season. The Maple Leafs must figure out a way to improve their faceoff efficiency despite the lack of depth at the centre ice position. Darren’s Grey Cup Prediction: Take the Saskatchewan Roughriders

8:15 Alex Marvez – Fox Sports One Football Analyst

The NFL is still fighting an ongoing battle in a desperate attempt to minimize the use of the “N word.” The bottom line is that the league really can’t do much about the use of this controversial word. An NFL locker room is not a “common workplace” therefore how do you change the culture of this environment? Jerry Jones’ ringing endorsement of head coach Jason Garrett shouldn’t carry too much weight because Jones has proven to be a wildly unpredictable individual. Three football games of note this weekend: #1 - New York Jets @ Baltimore Ravens: Take the Ravens. #2 - Idaho @ Florida State: Take Florida State. #3 - Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cleveland Browns: Stay away from this game!

8:30 Mike Brophy – CBC Hockey Analyst

The Nashville Predators have always been known as a “very hardworking team” which is a stark contrast to the Maple Leafs style of play. Toronto remains very much a “work in progress” & are still having difficulty moving the puck out of their own zone. This is an area of concern that Randy Carlyle & company must address if this team want to get out of the first round of the playoffs. The Maple Leafs might be guilty of relying too much on skill instead of being willing to pay the price & score some “greasy goals.” Keep in mind we still haven’t seen this team at 100%.

Recap:

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

Last night’s 4-0 victory over the Washington Capitals was probably the best game Pittsburgh has played all year. If the Penguins keep up this level of play look out! Assistant coach Jacques Martin has done wonders with the defense & goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury seems to have finally rediscovered his game. If Fleury continues this level of play he could become Team Canada’s third string goaltender when Sochi 2014 rolls around. The Maple Leafs must be careful that they don’t rush centre Tyler Bozak back into the lineup tonight vs. the Nashville Predators. Nazem Kadri must make a concentrated effort when he returns to the lineup because he could’ve received two suspensions last week in Minnesota.

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger & Steve Simmons

The Nashville Predators are coming off a 2-0 shut out vs. the Detroit Red Wings which proves that “this team shouldn’t be taken lightly.” It will also be interesting to see the continued development/maturation of budding prospect Seth Jones. The Predators have to rely on outworking their opponent because they continually struggle to score goals. Seth Jones could have a very realistic shot at making Team USA when the Olympics head to Sochi in February 2014.

8:00 Scott Burnside – ESPN.com NHL Columnist

The Washington Capitals were coming off a very impressive 4-1 win vs. St. Louis until last night’s 4-0 shut out loss vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins. There are several interesting candidates for many teams that are scheduled to head to the winter Olympics in 2014. If Jonathan Quick is not able to participate in Sochi 2014, Team USA could opt to choose goaltenders such as Ben Bishop, Ryan Miller, Craig Anderson, or Cory Schneider.

8:15 Kevin Harlan – Monday Night Football Radio Voice

Pittsburgh @ Cleveland could be an interesting match up for these old time rivals. Both teams are steeped in tradition & post identical 4-6 records heading into Sunday afternoons game. The beauty of the NFL is teams are able to rebuild in a relatively short period of time (see Kansas City Chiefs) The Carolina Panthers are a very good team (speed, good running backs, solid defense, emerging quarterback) & could be poised to “take the next step.” The Detroit Lions are another Jekyll & Hyde team that will only go as far as quarterback Matthew Stafford will take them.

Hour 3:

Alex Marvez discusses week 12 in the NFL, & Nashville Predators assistant coach Phil Housley previews tomorrow's game vs. the Maple Leafs. Hour 3 Audio

Recap:

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

Michel Therrien’s decision to put Max Pacioretty & David Desharnis together paid instant dividends as the Montreal Canadiens cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. The Columbus Blue Jackets were thoroughly embarrassed after last night’s 7-0 drubbing vs. the Edmonton Oilers. Several Oilers had strong performances (Gagner, Yakupov, etc) but it was painfully obvious that Columbus was not adequately prepared. The Maple Leafs continued their home ice dominance based on yesterday’s 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders. The only problem for Toronto is that they are getting out shot most nights however the goaltending has masked some of these deficiencies. Vancouver Canucks head coach John Tortorella was thoroughly disgusted his teams’ shootout loss vs. the Florida Panthers. Tortorella is trying to change Vancouver’s propensity for slow starts but let’s give Florida credit for playing a very strong road game.

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger – NHL Insider

David Clarkson felt a big weight lifted off his shoulders after finally scoring his first goal in his eleventh regular season game in a Maple Leafs uniform. Hopefully this gives Clarkson a much needed boost & helps him return to goal scoring form. Morgan Rielly continue his strong play & has quickly earned the trust from head coach Randy Carlyle. If Rielly keeps playing at this level it’s quite conceivable that he remains with the club for the remainder of the season. Nazem Kadri is scheduled to return to the lineup tomorrow vs. the Nashville Predators therefore we should expect one centre to sit (Smith, Smithson, Holland, etc…) Nashville should be a difficult test for the Maple Leafs despite the absence of All-Star goaltender Pekka Rinne.

8:15 Alex Marvez – Fox Sports One Football Analyst

Things are falling apart for the Houston Texans which should make for an interesting game on Sunday afternoon when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Kansas City Chiefs have to make sure they don’t take the San Diego Chargers too lightly when they square off late on this week. Other games of note this week include: Chicago Bears @ St. Louis Rams: Take the Rams. Pittsburgh Steelers @ Pittsburgh Steelers: Take the Steelers. Indianapolis Colts @ Arizona Cardinals: Stay away from this game because it’s dangerous/unpredictable.

8:30 Phil Housley – Nashville Predators Assistant Coach

Coaching the 2012 World Junior Championships in Ufa Russia was an absolute treat. Not many “experts” picked Team USA to win the tournament however the team had a balanced attack, stellar defense, & sensational goaltending. Seth Jones has matured beautifully over the past few months & will be a star in this league for many years to come.

Recap:

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

The Pittsburgh Penguins are quietly rounding into form but still need to improve their power play efficiency, defensive zone coverage, & overall team speed. Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin took over last night’s game during the third period en route to a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Sidney Crosby is the Penguins hardest working player & relishes the challenges that come along with wearing a “C” in the NHL. Crosby sets the bar high & leads by example which is contagious for the rest of the players/fans. Forward Reilly Smith has been a revelation this season with the Boston Bruins. Smith has found success at all levels of hockey & the Bruins brass probably didn’t know just how good this player could be. The Toronto Maple Leafs will have their hands full tonight as they try to contain local superstar John Tavares. One of the players that Toronto must contain is Kyle Okposo. Okposo has had a very strong start to the season however the Islanders remain a Jekyll & Hyde team which can be maddeningly frustrating for their fan base. The Maple Leafs should expect roughly 15-20 goals from winger David Clarkson this season however his timing seems to be a little off, which could be attributed to the ten game suspension at the start of the season.

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger & Steve Simmons

Goaltending remains a hot topic as the Maple Leafs approach the quarter point of the season. Reimer vs. Bernier has become a focal point of intrigue for the media because goaltending has been one of Toronto’s strengths so far this season. New York Islanders forward Thomas Vanek remains questionable for tonight’s game but we could get an update on his condition later on today. Winger Phil Kessel is mired in a four game goal scoring drought but this could be due to the numerous injuries at the centre ice position. Unfortunately there’s not too much new to report with regards to contract negotiations surrounding captain Dion Phaneuf.

8:15 Jesse Palmer – TSN Football Analyst

Last night’s controversial call should’ve gone to the New England Patriots because tight end Rob Gronkowski wasn’t able to compete for the football. This should’ve resulted in a pass interference penalty on the play however the referees obviously felt differently about this incident. Tom Brady seemed disgusted after the loss but was reluctant to criticize the referees in light of the Trent Williams episode on Sunday evening. The Carolina Panthers are quickly proving that they are a “playoff team” but still have a ways to go before they are able to dethrone the New Orleans Saints.

8:30 Kelly Gruber – Former Blue Jays Third Baseman

Team building takes a lot more effort than simply throwing some money at a few players & hoping for a World Series title once October rolls around. The Blue Jays have made strides towards the later half of the 2013 season & appear to be on the right track. In order to return to elite status Toronto needs to acquire a legitimate number one pitcher & improve their overall defense. Manager John Gibbons should feel more much comfortable in 2014 because it will be his second year at the helm.

Recap:

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin had his second period goal vs. the Dallas Stars waved off & ended up losing last nights game by a score of 2-1. A similar incident occurred last week in Ottawa which makes one wonder “Why is there no coach’s challenge in the NHL?” The Ottawa Senators have a propensity to start games very poorly & their penalty killing has been wildly inconsistent. The Columbus Blue Jackets were simply far more aggressive/physical on the puck & the Senators were never able to recover. Los Angeles Kings backup goalie Ben Scrivens has filled in admirably after starter Jonathan Quick went down with a groin injury & is expected to be out for the next 4-6 weeks. The Kings have played very well defensively in front of Scrivens & seem to be trending upwards after a difficult shootout loss vs. Buffalo last week. The St. Louis Blues weren’t able to overcome a horrendous outing by Jaroslav Halak (three goals on six shots) & eventually rode Braden Holtby’s forty six save performance en route to the 4-1 victory. The Maple Leafs decision to move James van Riemsdyk to the centre position could be officially classified as an unmitigated disaster. van Riemsdyk is a natural power winger so playing him out of position makes absolutely no sense. The Buffalo Sabres have definitely increased their level of compete since the Ted Nolan era began last week. Nolan should be able to aid in player development although the team still has a long ways to go before they can start thinking playoffs.

7:45 Darren Dreger: Leafs Breakfast – NHL Insider

The James van Riemsdyk move to centre wasn’t exactly a success because he plays more of a power forward style of game. The Buffalo Sabres seemed to receive a bit of an emotional boost after the hiring of Ted Nolan & Pat LaFontaine but there are still plenty of questions hovering over this franchise. How long will Ryan Miller & Steve Ott be in Buffalo? Only time will tell…Newly acquired centre Peter Holland must use this opportunity to prove that he belongs once Toronto gets healthy. Holland could turn out to be a low risk high reward type of acquisition who eventually emerges into a nice 2nd/3rd line player. The Maple Leafs weren’t able to provide an update on the Mark Fraser situation however some news on the injury could surface later today. David Clarkson is still struggling to find his role with his new team & might be starting to show visible signs of frustration. Clarkson is a character player that can contribute in many ways besides on the scoreboard. We should be able to get a better understanding of Clarkson’s role on this team once everyone is finally healthy. Toronto has earned the following grades as we approach the quarter point of the season: Team: A to A-. Goaltending: A to A+. Defense: B to B+. The Leafs must now prepare to face a gritty New York Islanders squad tomorrow & can’t afford to take them lightly. If New York gets quality goaltending Toronto could be in for a long night…

8:30 Chris Schultz – TSN Football Analyst

The Denver Broncos should still be considered to be the number one team in the NFL after last night’s 27-17 victory over the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs “had their moments” & quarterback Alex Smith looked impressive at various points throughout the game. If the Broncos are able to secure the AFC West division Manning could get some much needed rest before heading into the playoffs. The downfall of the Toronto Argonauts was allowing the Hamilton Tiger Cats to score thirty points inside the twenty. It should be very interesting to see how much of a factor home field advantage is when the 101 Grey Cup kicks off on Sunday in Saskatchewan.

8:45 Gary Green – NHL Network

When you look at the top teams in the NHL the bulk of the “elite” teams are from the Western Conference. When was the last time this happened? The Tampa Bay Lightning have easily been one of the surprise teams in the Eastern Conference this season. The Maple Leafs have been surprising throughout the first twenty games (12-7-1) & have been particularly efficient on home ice. There’s still plenty of room for improvement but there’s also plenty of reason for optimism! Unfortunately the team has been besieged by injuries so it would be interesting to see how the team performs once everyone is healthy.
