Recap:

6:45 Josh Lewenberg – TSN 1050 Toronto Raptors Beat Reporter

The Brooklyn Nets have really struggled this season (3-10) which can be attributed to the outrageous number of injuries (Kirilenko, Williams, Lopez, Terry) this squad has had to endure. The 2013 edition of the Raptors claim to be a more mature group, but only time will tell if the team is finally ready to “take the next step” & compete for a playoff spot. Toronto has done a much better job of coming back from adversity thanks to much improved play during the fourth quarter. The Raptors haven’t beaten a team above .500 this season & must be wary of a “deceivingly bad” Brooklyn nets squad. First year head coach Jason Kidd has taken a lot of heat for the Nets sluggish start but the truth is that there is plenty of blame to go around.

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

Last night’s match up between the Pittsburgh Penguins & Boston Bruins had a “playoff like atmosphere” to it. Both teams were incredibly disciplined & received stellar play from their goaltenders. The Toronto Maple Leafs had a horrendous performance last night vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets en route to a 6-0 shellacking. Randy Carlyle’s decision not to pull goaltender James Reimer was questionable however; we shouldn’t make too big a deal of this issue. Columbus is a very dangerous/underrated team that has the ability to surprise anyone on any given night. The concussion lawsuit against the NHL should not come as a major surprise based on the recent settlement in the NFL. The bottom line is that the NHL has been prepared for this type of lawsuit for a long period of time. The lawyers on the other side of the lawsuit will probably ask the NHL the following question “When did you know that bare knuckle fighting was dangerous to a player’s health?” This development should be very interesting to watch as more details are released in the future.

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger & Steve Simmons

The Maple Leafs simply were not prepared to face the Columbus Blue Jackets last night despite the return of number one centre Tyler Bozak. Goaltender James Reimer was part of Toronto’s “failed attempt” & all of the players in the locker room should feel deep shame for last night’s pathetic performance. Toronto has played two horrible games on home ice & now is the time for the Maple Leafs “internal leadership” to step up. Defenseman Mark Fraser & Jake Gardiner have really struggled & both might benefit from some more seasoning in the AHL. Time will tell if GM Dave Nonis decides to pull the trigger on a blockbuster trade in order to “spice things up.”

8:15 Jesse Palmer – TSN Football Analyst

RG3’s leadership abilities have come under major criticism during his second year in the NFL. It’s very easy to lead a team when “things are going your way” but what happens when the going gets tough (see 3-8 record) The bottom line is that the Washington Redskins have been saddled with a myriad of issues & it’s painfully obvious that RG3 is not at 100%. Perhaps the fans have unrealistic expectations due to the phenomenal success by quarterbacks (Wilson, Luck, Newton, etc…) Mike Shanahan is still considered a “good football coach” & should get another chance to right the ship in Washington.

8:30 Nick Gullo – Author “Into the Cage Rise of UFC Nation” (in-studio)

Fun chat with Nick Gullo regarding the MMA industry & the release of his new book “Into the Cage: Rise of UFC Nation.”

Recap:

6:15 Chris Schultz – TSN Football Analyst

The Saskatchewan Roughriders emerged victorious during yesterday’s Grey Cup in what can be best described as a true “college atmosphere.” The Hamilton Tiger Cats should learn from this experience & can take solace in the fact that they made great strides in 2013. The Roughriders have a very strong offensive line & were led by running back Kory Sheets en route to the 45-23 victory. The Roughriders must try to avoid any regression next season & the Tiger Cats must focus on “taking the next step” in 2014. With several new stadiums popping throughout the CFL it’s clear that the future of the league is bright & shiny. Toronto Argonauts defensive coordinator Chris Jones could be an attractive candidate for the vacant Edmonton Eskimos coaching position.

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

The Maple Leafs were able to defeat the Washington Capitals 2-1 in a shootout primarily because of their stellar play on special teams. Head coach Randy Carlyle has done wonders with the penalty kill since arriving in Toronto two years ago. The Maple Leafs must sure that they don’t take tonight’s game vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets too lightly. Columbus is loaded with “under the radar” players such as Brandon Dubinsky, Jack Johnson, etc…but has had problems giving a consistent sixty minute effort every night. Contrary to popular belief Craig Anderson still remains the Ottawa Senators number one goaltender however; backup Robin Lehner has proved that he is indeed “the real deal” this season.

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger – NHL Insider

James Reimer’s “never say die” attitude & strong work ethic have made him a valuable cog for the Maple Leafs throughout the first quarter of the season. Head coach Randy Carlyle now has some difficult decisions to make after Reimer’s magnificent forty nine save effort vs. Washington on Saturday night. Toronto now prepares to face a pesky Columbus Blue Jackets squad that has been wildly inconsistent over the past ten games but still has “plenty of pride.” In order for the Maple Leafs to be successful tonight they must get off to a fast start and “stick to their identity.”

8:00 Brian McNally – Washington Times Redskins/Capitals Reporter

It’s painfully obvious that RG3 is still “technically not 100%” which helps explain some of his regression during his second season in the NFL. There appears to be some sort of a disconnect between RG3 & head coach Mike Shanahan however the extent of the rift is not well know. The bottom line is that Washington is 3-7 so frustrations are bound to boil over at some point. The Redksins need to upgrade a lot of areas (secondary, offensive line) during the offseason & the team is still recovering from the failed Albert Haynesworth experiment. The 49ers are very strong defensively meaning that Washington will need to be focused in order to secure the “W.” The Washington Capitals have come off three disappointing losses (Pittsburgh, Montreal, Toronto) but have still have managed to “stay afloat” in the Metropolitan division.

8:45 Jody Shelley – Columbus Blue Jackets Broadcast/Team Ambassador

Working with the community in Columbus has been an absolute privilege/treat because at the end of the day “it’s always nice to give back.” The Blue Jackets have a ravenous fan base even though the team has had some struggles since their inception back in 2000. If Columbus wants to get back into the playoffs they will need goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to revert back to his 2013 Vezina winning form.
