Recap:
12:05PM: Ray Ferraro (TSN Hockey Analyst):
Ray Ferraro is calling from the airport in Boston where all flights have been cancelled due to a severe snow storm in the city. Corey Perry isn't automatically gone from Anaheim just because Ryan Getzlaf signed an eight-year deal. The Ducks still have Bobby Ryan to sign as well. They can't go into the trade deadline without re-signing players such as Ryan and Perry. The team has been doing very well but it will be hard for Anaheim to re-sign all of their upcoming free agents due to the NHL cap hit.
|
2:30PM: Sam Mitchell in studio:
What bothers players and coaches is that fans think that they are not human. Fans have unrealistic expectations and expect them to be perfect. Fans have to understand that players don't miss a shot on purpose and that coaches want to make the right decisions. Mitchell also discusses his experience going into press conferences after a game. He was frustrated when the media asked him the same questions over and over again. He respects reporters who ask well thought-out, tough questions. When it comes to questioning players, he would never ask them why they cannot play if they tell him that they can't. Hayes and Mitchell also talk about the Miami Heat's current win streak and if they can keep this up.
|
3:00PM: Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole (TSN Sporscentre personalities):
Jay thinks that he would be a better diplomat than Dan if one of them were to go to Korea as a diplomat. They talk about Denis Rodman's involvement in North Korea and how Rodman's idea of bringing Obama and Kim Jong-Il together through basketball did not work at all. Both of them think that Rod Smith is one of the best veteran TSN employees because of his professionalism and hard work unlike themselves who get relegated to the 1am EST show each night.

|
Hour 2 (The Bryan Hayes Show):

|
Recap:
12:05PM: Ray Ferraro (TSN Hockey Analyst)
Stompin' Tom's hockey song will be around forever now because he has passed away. The song can be compared to the popularity of "We are the Champions". Dave Dziurzynski getting knocked out by McLaren is very unfortunate. Fighting shouldn't be completely eliminated in the game but if that fight didn't happen last night, it wouldn't have changed the outcome. The fight from last night shows how pointless fighting in the NHL can be. Nazem Kadri has been as good as he has because the other team's coaches are sending out their first line to go after the first line: Phil Kessel, JVR and Tyler Bozak in stead of Kadri.
|
1:30PM: Andy Brickley (Bruins colour analyst for NESN)
There is still anticipation about the Phil Kessel trade from a Boston Bruins fan's perspective. Doug Hamilton will be a terrific hockey player because of his maturity level and he understands the game very well. Brickley expects the bruins to be making big moves at the trade deadline. Tuukka Rask believes that he is a good player and the players on Boston have confidence in him but he may not be as good as Tim Thomas was for the team.
|
2:30PM: Jeremy Taggart (Our Lady Peace drummer)
The popularity of Stompin' Tom goes up a lot more when you go to the smaller cities of Canada - not so much the metropolitan areas. Connors wasn't afraid to be Canadian. It's a great feeling when your song is as popular as Connors' hockey song because he has made a mark in Canadian history. Taggart kind of feels weird when stadiums play OLP's songs at sports games. Taggart lived with Sean Avery for 2 years in LA. Says Avery says things because he knows the media will react but he isn't the only player who creates controversy.
|
3:00PM: James Duthie in studio (The NHL on TSN)
James Duthie had a funny music discussion off the top of the segment. Duthie a big fan of the 80's band One-to-One. He admits he doesn't enjoy watching himself on TV. Gave the Leafs an A- grade for the performance this season but they still have improvements to make. After the lockout, the Leafs are finding ways to win. There are 24 games left and it will be very hard for teams who are out of the playoff spot to catch up. The Ottawa Senators looks like they hit a wall and they are probably about to realize that they cannot compete without Erik Karlsson. There will be significant pressure to keep Ryan Getzlaf and if they don't lock up Corey Perry, he will walk. Duthie thinks that the Ducks have to trade Perry and get someone valuable to help them win the Cup this year. Duthie also adds that Dave Nonis will sign Perry but the Leafs may have to give up someone like Phil Kessel.
|
3:30PM: Mark Feinsand (NY Daily News)
Hayes and Mark Feinsand discuss the early injuries the New York Yankees will have to face in the first month of the MLB regular season. Mariano Rivera will retire and Andy Pettitte may decide to retire. However, Feinsand doesn't think Derek Jeter will be retiring any time soon. The Yankees definitely have to try to build a team after their star players retire in the future. The Toronto Blue Jays are huge contenders this season but Feinsand wants to see them play on the field before he makes any judgments. He predicts that Toronto, Tampa Bay, and New York will be potential AL East Champions.

|
Recap:
Jonas Siegel & Michael Traikos (National Post)
Jonas Siegel, TSN's beat reporter for the Maple Leafs and the National Post's Michael Traikos join Bryan & Jamie to discuss the Leafs and Senators progress to this point among other things about the teams. It's too early to tell if the Leafs will make the playoffs, there's too many factors in play right now that the Leafs need to maintain and still too early to tell. I'd be very surprised if the Senators stayed in the hunt all year long with all the injuries they have sustained. You have to give Carlyle credit with the way he's taken players like Kostka, Fraser, and Holzer that were in the American League last year and plugged them in at the NHL level and performed very well in their roles.
|
Ray Ferraro TSN Hockey Analyst
Ray Ferraro TSN's Hockey Analyst joins the guys to talk about Marc Staal's gruesome injury from last night's game against the Flyers. I'm amazed that the league has not made visors mandatory at this point and I can't understand why players who've worn them their entire lives prior to entering the NHL refuse to wear them. There is no argument that could possible be made for me to explain why a guy wouldn't wear a visor on the ice, it just makes no sense to me at all. At a certain point I could see insurance companies and law getting involved in the dispute over making it a rule to wear them. I'm not expecting a high scoring game tonight between the Leafs and Senators. It's going to be a low scoring tight game with two teams that have sort of scrapped their way to the records they have now.
|
Jim Rutherford (Carolina Hurricanes GM)
Jim Rutherford the Carolina Hurricanes GM joined Bryan & Jamie to talk about the season for his Canes thus far and the proposed realignment the league has talked about. You can't replace a guy like Cam Ward, our back-up's and call up's have played great for us but everyone is going to have to tighten up a lot more now. Goalies have always been the most important player on the team, a good goalie makes for a good coach and very few teams have not had a good goalie. The Southeast division isn't what I'd call weak, I think when you look at all of the teams in it when they're all healthy it's a very tough and talented division to play in. From a Carolina standpoint we like the NHL's realignment proposal but there are things that you can poke holes in such as the unbalanced number of teams in the two conferences and the wild card idea. The league should seriously look into making visors mandatory for all young players coming into the league and slowly filtering out the one's not wearing the visors like that.

Mike Florio – Pro Football Talk/NBC Sports
Pro Football Talk and NBC Sports' Mike Florio came on the Bryan Hayes show today to discuss a new Sports Illustrated article about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as well as the standard Joe Flacco's contract is setting for QB's. Goodell said his biggest fear is a playing dying on the field and you wonder what kind of backlash the NFL would have to deal with and that the sport as a while would face. That kind of tragedy could do tremendous damage from a business and sporting stand point to the NFL if it ever occurred. The contract that Joe Flacco signed earlier last week has now set a new standard that is going to be even higher to match when in a few years Aaron Rodgers is up for a contract extension with the Packers. Look for that extension to be one that will be extremely difficult to match for any other team.
|
Steve Konroyd – Blackhawks Analyst
Blackhawks analyst Steve Konroyd spoke to Bryan today about the team's tremendous start to the season and how it has not only taken over the entire city but the nation. The players themselves didn't even realize what was going on when they broke the record until they began noticing the mass amount of reporters after each game. What makes this more impressive is that in a shortened season where every game has a playoff atmosphere to it the team has still yet to lose in regulation and is now thriving on keeping the streak going. The Blackhawks success as a whole can be contributed to in part the team maturing and more particularly, players such as Patrick Kane and Leddy maturing as well.

Ernie Whitt Team Canada Manager for WBC
Team Canada's manager Ernie Whitt, talks to Bryan about his thoughts on Russell Martin pulling out of the tournament this late and his thoughts on the WBC as a whole. We told Martin that we'd consider letting him play shortstop if the Pirates gave him the approval but that we'd rather him catch for us, obviously he didn't want to do that. I agree with Martin's thoughts about the timing of the tournament, it's terrible the concept of it is great though. On paper the Blue Jays look great and I'm cheering for them and the city but they have a lot of high expectations that I really hope they can live up to.

Recap:
Jonas Siegel:
Jonas Siegel, TSN's beat reporter for the Maple Leafs joins Bryan Hayes and Jeff O'Neill to discuss the Leafs shipping out forward Mike Brown and other possible changes. Jake Gardiner has found his game and is looking like the player he was last year so somebody may is going to have to be placed on waivers if they're going to call him up. Reimer was shaky in his first start back in Long Island but the Leafs need to give him a chance to get back into the rhythm of things after being out for a little over three weeks. Look for Reimer to get the call tonight against the Devils.
|
Ray Ferraro:
TSN Hockey Insider Ray Ferraro joins the guys to talk about the Patrick Kaleta hit on Brad Richards and the Harry Zolnierczyk hit on Patrick Lundin. There needs to be longer suspensions for hits like these. Instead of four games give the guy eight, instead of eight give the next guy ten, the game is so much more violent and dangerous right now the NHL needs to get in under control. The Canadiens are getting harder and harder to ignore as a Cup contender, they haven't lost in regulation in eleven games since they got blasted by Toronto. They are a much better team than I thought they'd be this year.
|
Scott MacArthur:
TSN's Blue Jays Beat Reporter Scott MacArthur spoke with Bryan today during the Hayes Show to discuss the importance of spring training games and what they mean or lack there of. R.A. Dickey, who's had some rough outings so far this spring and rthe rest of the Jays performances don't matter at all. Players are just working themselves into shape right now and adjusting things. Bautista is a very intense guy which makes him great, but he needs to calm down with the umpires because you don't want to complicate your life with the guys who call the games. Look for Henry Blanco as the likely candidate to be catching R.A. Dickey on opening day as well as Thole probably being sent to AAA Buffalo.
|
Chris Kuc (Chicago Tribune):
Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune came on the Bryan Hayes Show to talk about the Blackhawks record setting start to the season. There is very little going wrong with this team when the coach can't find a single thing to complain about. Right now, everybody in the city is a Blackhawks fan, they've really captured the attention of the entire city and most of America. Patrick Kane has really begun to put it together this year on and off the ice. I don't think any of the trade talk involving him was ever legitimate or stemmed from the Blackhawks organization.
|
Matt Devlin:
Matt Devlin the play-by-play voice of the Raptors joined Bryan to talk about where the season really went South for them after looking promising when they acquired Rudy Gay. The Knicks game was great, had a playoff like atmosphere and ever since that game it's just been down hill. The Cleveland and Washington games are games that you need to win. Positives though are you have a legitimate superstar in Rudy Gay, you have DeMar DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross. The future of the Raptors looking brighter, Casey just needs to play guys like Ross and Valanciunas more down the stretch and next year you'll see the benefit of giving these guys more playing time. The Miami Heat have proved any notion of a championship hangover wrong and have showed they are a dominant team with this impressive win streak. The Heat are without a doubt the best team in the East.
