Recap:

6:30 Andi Petrillo – CBC Olympic Host

Contrary to popular belief there is actually quite a bit of scenic beauty scattered throughout the town of Sochi. There’s also a lot of Olympic buzz in Russia as the locals prepare to embrace this unique experience. The atmosphere should only intensify once all of the hockey players arrive & the media seems to have blown the whole “#Sochiproblems fiasco” way out of proportion.

7:15 Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC Analyst

Martin St. Louis has always been an extremely motivated competitor however Team Canada shouldn't rely on one individual to “swing this event.” The Canadians enters this tournament with plenty of questions chemistry, goaltending, power play, penalty kill, etc… This team is built around the centre ice position which is a stark contrast from Team USA (size/speed on the wings) It should be very interesting to see where St. Louis fits into this team long-term.

7:45 Leafs Breakfast: Darren Dreger & Jeff O’Neill

The Maple Leafs displayed a “45 minute effort” during last night’s 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Randy Carlyle & company were able to overcome a sluggish start & were buoyed by a spirited goal from Jay McClement. Yesterday’s game was a “coming out party” of sorts for David Clarkson, perhaps this is the turning point of his season? One player that could be on the move prior to today’s 3PM ET trade freeze deadline is Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner.

8:00 Brian Williams – CTV Host (In-Studio)

Legendary sport broadcaster Brian Williams joined Mike & Dave for an in-studio chat, to reflect on some of his fondest Olympic memories.

Recap:

Pierre McGuire – NHL on NBC

Pierre spoke about Andrew Ladd, James Neal, Claude Giroux, and Marty St. Louis would be the favourites on his list to replace Steven Stamkos. Pierre says speed will be a huge factor on the big ice to determine who will be named to Team Canada. Pierre feels Canada’s dominance down the middle gives them an edge in the tournament.

Leafs Breakfast w/Darren Dreger

Darren talks about the Steven Stamkos situation and who might replace him for Sochi. Darren feels it will be tough for the relationship of Yzerman/St.Louis and possible distraction for the Lightning until a replacement is announced. Darren says if St. Louis is snubbed for Team Canada again then it will affect his situation in Tampa and he may want out. Darren feels it will be St. Louis because Steve Yzerman has the final call. Darren previewed the Leafs/Lightning game tonight saying the Lightning have been rolling.

Kevin Dineen (from Sochi) – Canada National Women’s Team Head Coach

Kevin talked about his interesting year getting fired by the Panthers and joining Hockey Canada program. Kevin talked about his Olympic experience as a player in 1984 and how it has helped him heading into Sochi as a head coach. Kevin says everything has been perfect in Sochi despite media reports of issues. Kevin says despite everyone picking Canada and U.S. he cannot over smaller countries trying to knock Canada off.

Steve Simmons – Sun Media

Steve called from Sochi and talked about the buzz surrounding the Stamkos decision and feels Claude Giroux deserves to be named to Team Canada over Martin St. Louis. Steve talks about how he doesn’t have a feel for the Games yet because the public is fenced out of the massive Olympic complex. Steve says he has one of the nice hotel rooms but it is freezing and he has no blankets.

Jim Ralph – Leafs Colour Analyst

Jim talked about the Team Canada and the Marty St. Louis situation. Jim recalled a story about Gary Roberts making the 1991 Canada Cup then was cut the next day because Mark Messier joined the team late. Roberts used it as motivation and St. Louis will do it if he is not named as Stamkos replacement. Jim says the Leafs need to be ready at the start of the game tonight in Tampa. The effort needs to be there because they did not have a good effort against Florida.

Alex says Johnny Manziel off-field antics might scare off some teams from drafting him but his skills are off the charts. Alex says the NCAA Signing Day is overhyped and many kids do not make the NFL.

Jack Armstrong – Raptors Colour Analyst
