Recap:

7:30 Steve Milton – Columnist Hamilton Spectator

The “Tim Hortons Field” fiasco is quickly becoming an epic disaster. This situation has been really hard on the team because there’s so much uncertainty surrounding the Labour Day Classic. If the stadium isn’t ready to go for Monday the backup plan would be to play Tuesday night at Rogers Centre (however there’s also the possibility the Ti-Cats play Tuesday night at Tim Hortons Field) At this point the Ti-Cats seem to be really counting on a “last minute sprint from the builders.” This has been an ongoing saga for the 1.5 years with the team playing “32 games outside of their home building.”

7:45 Scott MacArthur – TSN 1050 Blue Jays Reporter

At this point the biggest problem for the Blue Jays is that they can’t attract free agent pitching because Rogers Centre is a “home run hitters haven” The good news is that Toronto has a lot of young pitching that seem ready to break through. Perhaps the biggest problem with trading Jose Bautista is that the positional roster is built to win now. Some people feel that these pitchers could be used to “rebuild the positional roster” by acquiring 2-3 assets in exchange for Bautista. If Bautista was traded the Jays would need to get a pitcher, middle infielder, & outfielder in return.

8:00 Charley Casserly – NFL.com analyst & Former Redskins/Texans GM

St. Louis Rams QB Shaun Hill is a well respected veteran even though he hasn’t played much over the past few years. There are also concerns as to whether Hill can handle the rigors of a sixteen game season however Jeff Fisher hasn’t ruled out any trades in the future (Mark Sanchez doesn’t appear to be leaving Philadelphia anytime soon) Out of all the rookie QB’s the most “game ready” would appear to be Teddy Bridgewater & Derek Carr (let’s not mention Andrew Luck because those type of players are generational) Johnny Manziel has improved dramatically from week one to week three which is encouraging for the Browns. Marc Trestman has done a wonderful job with Chicago & could very well be a team on the rise. Richie Incognito will probably be faced with a zero tolerance policy (wherever he ends up) & it will be up to the locker room to embrace him. At this point Seattle remains the best team in the NFC (just by a hair) & Denver/New England are the toast of the AFC.

8:30 Michael Collins – ESPN.com Senior Golf Analyst

Breaking up with a caddie/swing coach via text/phone call is actually quite common place in the world of golf. The Sean Foley/Tiger Woods divorce is kind of ironic because “Foley never really had Tiger Woods at 100%” Foley also had two proven players in his stable Justin Rose & Hunter Mahan, both whom have had success. Perhaps this relationship simply “ran its course” & the fact that Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major since 2008 probably was a major factor. When Tiger & Butch split Woods told people “he was going to do his own thing” then quickly moved onto Hank Haney, repeated the cycle, & then moved onto Sean Foley. Therefore it would not be surprising if Tiger Woods was “quietly talking to someone else.” Don’t expect Tiger to return to Butch Harmon because “that bridge hasn’t been burned, it’s been blown up."

Hour 3:

Mark Zecchino recaps the Barclays, Steve Simmons chats Blue Jays, & Timberwolves assistant GM Rob Babcock breaks down the Wiggins/Love trade. Hour 3 Audio

Recap:

8:00 Mark Zecchino – Host “Golf Talk Canada”

It was a spirited adventure at The Barclay’s over the weekend. Ridgewood Country Club is a good course however there are no “marquee holes that really stand out.” It always feels a little bit more special when the event is at Liberty National Golf Course (because this element/vibe seemed to be lacking this season) David Hearn & Graham DeLaet have to be disappointed with their performances over the weekend (especially DeLaet who fell outside of the top thirty) Hearn was happy to make the cut however more was expected heading into this tournament. At this point there are plenty questions surrounding the Ryder Cup because players such as Keegan Bradley have struggled while Brandt Snedeker, Webb Simpson, & Hunter Mahan have flourished. Perhaps the bigger question facing golf is “how the sport will handle the imminent decline of Tiger Woods?”

8:15 Steve Simmons – Sun Media & The Reporters

Drew Hutchison pitched a gem last night & deserved a much better outcome. “Player performance” has really dogged this team (Jose Bautista, Jose Reyes, Nolan Reimold) these are not managerial issues therefore blaming John Gibbons isn’t the answer. If the Jays are keeping Alex Anthopoulos in the fold he will eventually have to determine if “Gibbons is the right man for the job.” It’s difficult to determine if this will be Jose Bautista’s last season with the team, because he brings many intangibles however his leadership has been questionable.

8:45 Rob Babcock – Minnesota Timberwolves Assistant GM

The Timberwolves needed to do something “once it became obvious that Kevin Love would not return to Minnesota at the end of next season.” Minnesota then had to figure out “the best way to move forward” & quickly maximize an expiring asset. Perhaps the biggest wild card is Anthony Bennett who appears to be in tremendous shape & is very motivated to have a solid 2014-15 season. Sometimes people get “too high or low too quickly on players” often forgetting the fact that “a lot of these players are just kids.” In terms of expectations for Andrew Wiggins & the upcoming season “all he has to do is work hard & be open to learning.” Ricky Rubio needs to get stronger/more physical in order to “take the next step in his development” & must improve his sub-par shooting skills. The bottom line is that it should be a very interesting/exciting season in Minnesota!
