February 27: Show In Review

The Canadian Press

Matt and Bob are joined by Seth Everett to discuss Mike Trout’s contract negotiations and what to expect from the Jays this season, and Josh Lewenberg checks in to chat about how the chemistry between Demar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry has been key to the Raptors success this season.

Recap:

Seth Everett, FOX Sports:

We’ve seen enough financially responsible teams be successful and win championships. Trout might be willing to forego his arbitration years, but he also wants the possibility of becoming a free agent before the age of 30.

Josh Lewenberg, TSN 1050 Raptors Reporter

Josh discussed the chemistry between DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and how they’ve worked well together, both on and off the court. The Raptors are in tough against the Wizards tonight, although Washington is without Maybner “Nene” Hilario.

The Canadian Press

Bob and Matt are joined by James Wisniewski to discuss his experience playing with Jonathan Toews and the Blue Jackets’ post-Olympic playoff push, and Scott MacArthur checks in to chat about the importance of Brandon Morrow to the Blue Jays' rotation and whether Brett Lawrie is primed for a breakout season.

Recap:

James Wisniewski, Columbus Blue Jackets Defenceman

Jonathan Toews really hasn’t changed at all since he was a 19 year old in the NHL. He’s always been a super serious guy and his commitment to the game is obvious. The Chicago Blackhawks really allowed Wisniewski and the other young d-men (Keith, Seabrook) a lot of leeway and space to make mistakes and develop properly. The return of Nathan Horton is going to make the Blue Jackets a much better team, and getting him back is like making a blockbuster trade without giving up anything.

Scotty MacArthur, TSN 1050 Blue Jays Reporter

Brett Lawrie didn’t have a full Spring Training last year, and that really hampered him throughout the regular season. It takes certain guys a long period of time to get your timing, and that’s why its so important. You have to be excited about Brett Lawrie, he seems to be maturing and he could really take a big step in his age 24 season. Brandon Morrow is going to need to be the stabilizer for this ballclub.

The Canadian Press

Bob and Matt discuss the Martin St. Louis trade rumours with James Duthie, and are joined by John Axford to chat about Team Canada’s Olympic hockey win and the start of spring training with the Indians.

Recap:

James Duthie, NHL on TSN:

Thinks that Marty St. Louis would like to be traded, and this could have been in his mind for a while. He’s always talked about getting back East to where his wife is from. Always thought he wanted to end his career in the East. If Ben Bishop can play like he has this year, the Lightning are a definite contender in the East.

John Axford, Cleveland Indians Closer

Discussed the difficulties of watching the Team Canada game while in Arizona for Spring Training, but there was a lot of trash talk from his American teammates from both the women’s and men’s hockey games.

The Canadian Press

Bob and Matt break down Canada’s dominant defensive effort in Sochi with James Mirtle and Mark Madden, and are joined by Matt Williamson to discuss the combine performances of Johnny Manziel and Jadeveon Clowney.

Recap:

James Mirtle, Globe and Mail:

This was the best defence corps we’ve ever seen in International play, and Drew Doughty and Shea Weber really showed that they’re two of the best on the entire planet. Doughty doesn’t put up the offensive totals because of the system he plays in, but he should be in the Norris conversation every single year considering his skillset.

Mark Madden, WXDX Pittsburgh

In a one and done tournament, anything can happen, but the reality is, Canada had the best team. Sweden was decimated by injury and suspension, so there was an aspect of luck to it. Olli Maata played an incredible tournament, and Crosby and Kunitz should come back strong. Malkin is a big baby, and his hand will need to be held to turn around his season.

Matt Williamson, ESPN

Analytics play a big role in today’s NFL, and they’ve certainly changed the way the scouts and GMs look at the draft. It’s amazing to watch some of these enormous men, namely Jadeveon Clowney, who are running 40 times that are beyond exceptional. There’s nothing “safe” about Johnny Manziel, and it’ll take the right team to take him and utilize him properly.
