CALGARY -- Todd Gill has been named the head coach of the Canadian under-18 men's hockey team for the annual Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August.
The former Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman is the coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Kingston Frontenacs.
The Ivan Hlinka is an annual summer tournament held in Slovakia and the Czech Republic and features eight countries.
Hockey Canada will choose the country's top men's players born in 1995 or later to participate in it. Canada is a four-time defending champion and has won gold seven of the last nine times.
Gill had 82 goals and 272 assists in 1,007 career NHL games with Toronto, San Jose, St. Louis, Phoenix, Detroit, Colorado and Chicago.
In his first season behind Kingston's bench, the Frontenacs went 19-41-3-5.
Gill was also an assistant coach to Jesse Wallin at last month's world under-18 hockey championship in the Czech Republic, where Canada won the bronze medal.
Hockey Canada also named Victoriaville Tigers coach Yanick Jean and Guelph Storm head coach Scott Walker as Gill's assistant coaches for the Ivan Hlinka tournament.
