The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Joffrey Lupul to a five-year, $26.25 million contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

In 66 games last season Lupul ranked second on the Leafs in goals (25), assists (42), points (67) and power play goals (eight).

"He clearly had the desire to have another good year, wanted to have more of a leadership role -- which has been recognized by the coaching staff -- and we felt strongly that he's a player that will be part of the solution moving forward and he would be a big part of a winning team here in Toronto," said Leafs general manager Dave Nonis.

Lupul is currently making $4.25 million in the final year of his current deal and would have been eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

"The deal made sense to us both financially and with respect to the dollars and the term and we were happy to get it done," said Nonis.

"We're happy that Loops wants to be in Toronto at least six more years."

The extension includes a limited no-trade clause, which allows the Maple Leafs to request a 14-team list from Lupul.

"There's a limited no trade, but the player is moveable," said Nonis

Lupul does have a history of injuries including a spinal cord contusion he suffered in 2007 while playing for the Philadelphia Flyers. He would later miss the final 59 games of the 2009-10 season and the first 28 games in 2012-11 as a result of a blood infection following surgery to repair the contusion. But Nonis was not concerned about Lupul's long-term durability.

"He's not an old man now, he's still in his 20s," said Nonis. "The injuries, yes, there's always risk with injuries. He has had some injuries in the past. The back injury was something that set him back for well over a year but he hasn't had any issues with that whatsoever since he's been here.

"In fact, it's probably as strong as its ever been."

At the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend in Ottawa, he was the assistant captain for Team Chara and scored two goals in the NHL All-Star Game.

In 517 career NHL games with Toronto, Anaheim, Philadelphia and Edmonton, Lupul has registered 323 points (151 goals, 172 assists) with 313 penalty minutes. The Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native was originally selected seventh overall by Anaheim in the 2002 Entry Draft.
