TORONTO - Former Toronto Argonauts cornerback Jim Rountree, a CFL all-star who was named to the franchise's All-Time Argos team, has died. He was 77.

Rountree died Oct. 1 after a battle with cancer, the Argonauts said Tuesday in a statement.

"Jim Rountree was one of the great old-time, two-way players in the Canadian Football League," said former teammate Peter Martin. "He could do it all — offence, defence and special teams, and he still holds team records that he set in the 1960s. He will be missed."

Rountree played for Toronto from 1958-67 and lined up primarily at cornerback. He also played receiver, running back and kick returner.

Over his career, the Miami native had 41 interceptions for 464 yards and one touchdown. The seven-time East Division all-star still holds the record for longest pass reception in club history at 108 yards (set against Saskatchewan on Sept. 10, 1961).

Rountree's 10 interceptions during the 1960 season also remains a single-season club record 53 years later. He was named a CFL all-star in 1962.

Rountree joined the Argonauts' coaching staff from 1968-72 and again from 1977-78. He was named an All-Time Argo in 2004 and three years later was named starting cornerback on the All-Time Argos team as voted by a committee of alumni, fans and media.

The University of Florida product was originally selected by the Baltimore Colts in the 1958 NFL Draft.

After retiring from football, Rountree and his wife, Nan, lived in Tamarac, Fla., and operated a successful insurance agency. He is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
