LONDON — Tottenham won at Wembley Stadium at the third attempt in the Champions League, beating CSKA Moscow 3-1 on Wednesday to secure third place in Group E and a consolation place in the Europa League.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane were on target as Tottenham won for only the second time in six games on its return to Europe's elite competition after a five-year absence. A defeat in Monaco two weeks ago ended Tottenham's hopes of advancing to the round of 16 of the Champions League. CSKA is out of Europe after finishing bottom of the group with only three points.

The Russian visitors took the lead at Wembley through Alan Dzagoev but Alli swept in Christian Eriksen's cross and Kane tapped into the net on the stroke of halftime to put Tottenham in front. The win was wrapped up in the 78th minute when goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev initially blocked Alli's shot but then managed to scoop the ball into his own net.

Tottenham, which also won in the reverse fixture in Moscow, was beaten by Monaco and Bayern Leverkusen in its previous games at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino's side is using English soccer's national stadium for European games this season while its White Hart Lane home across north London is gradually demolished to make way for a new stadium on the same site.

Tottenham is also due to play its domestic games at Wembley next season before moving into the new stadium in 2018.

Tottenham will now enter the second-tier Europa League in the round of 32 in February. Winning that competition secures a route back into the Champions League or by finishing in the Premier League's top four. Tottenham is fifth in the domestic standings.
