Open to a Move?

Tom Gulitti of the New Jersey Record wrote in his Fire and Ice column on Wednesday that Jaromir Jagr won't ask the Devils for a trade, but sounds as if he would like to get moved. Jagr, who turns 43 on Sunday, made it known that he is willing to take a reduced role if it means playing for a playoff team. The Devils are currently 12 points out of a playoff spot with 28 games to play.

Kessel To The Island? Not So Fast

Stephen Lorenzo of The New York Daily News isn't putting much stock in rumours about the Islanders going after Maple Leafs winger Phil Kessel to replace injured winger Kyle Okposo, given Kessel's streaky play, conditioning issues and $8 million cap hit through 2022.

Senators Selling?

As the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch wrote Tuesday night, the Senators are all but officially eliminated from playoff contention and should be looking to trade off pieces to other teams in the postseason picture.

Garrioch identifies several non-core players that GM Bryan Murray may consider moving. Winger Chris Neil could be sent to a contender for a chance at a Stanley Cup, while centre David Legwand has a year left on his contract but could be tough to move at $3 million against the cap. Pending UFA defenceman Marc Methot has been under the spotlight all season and could be dealt if he doesn't re-sign with the club, though both sides maintain they want to get a deal done.

Another player the Senators will need to decide on is Erik Condra, who's set to hit the market on July 1. Garrioch adds that Colin Greening - in the AHL on a one-way deal - could be a buyout option in the offseason, while defenceman Chris Phillip has told Murray he would like to stay.

Cap-strapped Rangers

Larry Brooks wrote in the New York Post on Wednesday that the Rangers have cap issues going into the trade deadline - even with Henrik Lundqvist on injured reserve. Brooks suggests the Rangers could get added cap relief by placing Lundqvist (and his $8.5 million cap hit) on long-term injury reserve, but GM Glen Sather would still have to free up salary - by shedding players - when his No. 1 goalie returns to the lineup.

Brooks adds that placing winger Lee Stempniak on waivers or sending him down to the minors could provide space, but it won't help their depth up front for a postseason run.

Sharks Standing Pat?

Kevin Kurz of csnbayarea.com doesn't expect the San Jose Sharks to make a big deal by Mar. 2, especially any that would involve dealing away a first-round pick or young roster players like Tomas Hertl, Matt Nieto and Mirco Mueller for rental help.

But there could be players moved out - forwards Tye McGinn, James Sheppard (both RFAs), Tyler Kennedy and Andrew Desjardins (pending UFAs), and defencemen Matt Irwin and Scott Hannan (both UFAs) as possible candidates that could open spots for the Sharks' more promising younger players. Goaltender Antti Niemi is also a name that's been mentioned this season, though Kurz adds he's still the best option in net and Alex Stalock hasn't shown enough yet to take the reins as their starter.
