Craig Button’s Players to Watch in the NCAA MEN’S DIVISION I ICE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

The 16 teams competing in the NCAA MEN’S DIVISION I ICE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP feature a total of 106 NHL draft picks. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button shared his thoughts on several of the top players to watch in the tournament (click here to read the full list):

  1. Jack Eichel – Boston University

Jack is the third player in Hockey East history to be named Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in the same season, following Brian Leetch and Paul Kariya. His blend of power, skill, smarts, and determination allows him to make a material impact on the game. That impact was felt by Boston University with his arrival on campus as the Terriers became one of the nation’s very best teams. The 2015 NHL draft has been highly anticipated because of the talents of Jack and Connor McDavid, two generational players. The best player in the NCAA this season.

  1. Matt O’Connor – Boston University

The native of Toronto has steadily progressed in his game and become one of the very best goalies in College Hockey. He has been a pillar of strength for the Terriers this season in leading them to a Hockey East Championship. He has the size, skill, and abilities that NHL teams look for in goaltenders, and is certainly one of the most highly sought after College free agents.

  1. Jim Vesey – Harvard University

Jim is a strong, forceful player who can excel in any situation. A member of Team USA’s World Juniors gold medal-winning team in 2013, he has developed into a dominant player for Harvard. A draft pick of the Nashville Predators, he’s a clutch performer, and Predators’ GM David Poile feels he could step into the team’s lineup immediately and help them. Would be the best player in the NCAA if not for Jack Eichel.

  1. Mike Reilly – University of Minnesota

Minnesota’s leading scorer and the nation’s leading scorer among defensemen. He is a dangerous player with tremendous poise who has the ability to control the game. Quick and agile, he’s very elusive and almost vaporizes when opponents try to check him. He finds himself in the same situation Justin Schultz did with regards to the NHL in that he can become an unrestricted free agent, and if that is the case, he will be the most highly sought after free agent of any kind this off-season.
