MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins' rotation will be without two of its top starters as the team placed right-handers Ervin Santana and Kyle Gibson on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday night's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Santana had been considered day to day after he was scratched from his last start with a sore back. Santana is listed with a lower back strain. Gibson is suffering from a right shoulder strain following his outing on April 22, a three-inning loss in which he allowed seven runs.

Minnesota selected the contract of right-hander Jose Berrios and recalled infielder Jorge Polanco. Berrios is considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and was 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 17 innings with Triple-A Rochester this season.

The team hasn't announced who will start Wednesday's finale against Cleveland, but Berrios could be in line to start and make his major league debut.

Twins manager Paul Molitor said the team expects both Santana and Gibson to be ready to be activated around the time in which they are eligible.

Santana started opening day for Minnesota and is 0-1 with a 3.15 ERA in four starts. He hasn't pitched since April 19 at Milwaukee and complained of discomfort after playing catch on Monday.

Gibson said he felt "more than general soreness," after his last start. He is 0-3 with a 6.10 ERA in his four starts.
