The Minnesota Vikings promoted quarterback Chandler Harnish from the practice squad to the active roster on Thursday, ahead of the league's 5pm et. cut-off time to promote practice squad players.

The move provides the Vikings with insurance in case starter Teddy Brigewater is unable to play with his sprained ankle. Bridgewater made his NFL debut last week, throwing for 317 yards with no interceptions and adding a rushing touchdown. However, the rookie left the game in the fourth quarter with the ankle injury and did not return. He was listed as questionable on Wednesday.

If Bridgewater can't play, 2011 first-round pick Christain Ponder will start for the Vikings.

Matt Cassel, the Vikings' Week 1 starter, was placed on injured reserve after Week 3 with a foot injury.

The Vikings and Packers are both 2-2.
