Rachel Homan and her Ottawa rink travelled overseas this past weekend to play in the Stockholm Ladies Cup while Winnipeg's Mike McEwen stayed in Canada and attempted to defend his title at the Point Optical Curling Classic in Saskatoon, SK. 

 

Women's Tour

Stockholm Ladies Cup from Stockholm, Sweden (Sept 25-27)

Ottawa's Rachel Homan continued her hot start to the 2015-16 WCT season as she and her foursome won the Curling Champions Tour's Stockholm Ladies Cup by beating rival Eve Muirhead of Scotland 7-5 in the final. This marks the second win of the year for Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Joanne Courtney and lead Lisa Weagle. They also won the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard in early September. 

The 26-year-old was in tough over the three-day event as she had to get past the likes of Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni, who beat her at a Grand Slam final earlier this season in Newfoundland,  7-2, Russia's Anna Sidorova 6-4 in the quarters, defending champion and home crowd favourite Margaretha Sigfridsson, 8-7, in the semis as well as Muirhead in the finals. Homan's only loss over the weekend came to Sweden's Anna Hasselborg, 6-7, in their final round robin game.

Olympic and Scotties champion Jennifer Jones was also at the event, but fell to Muirhead, 7-11, in the semis. The Scottish skip also topped defending world champion Alina Paetz in the quarterfinals, 8-0.

KW Fall Classic from Kitchener-Waterloo, ON (Sept 24-27)

Purse: $11, 900

Allison Flaxey of Caledon, ON beat American Erika Brown 7-3 in the final to capture her first victory of the season. The 30-year-old Flaxey went 6-1 over the weekend in KW and had to beat two-time defending champ and defending Ontario champion Julie Hastings in the semis, 6-5

The 20-rink field featured teams mostly from Ontario.

Mother Club Fall Curling Classic from Winnipeg, MB (Sept 24-27)

Purse: $10, 000

Winnipeg's Michelle Montford went a solid 6-1 to win the Mother Club Fall Curling Classic. The 27-year-old beat fellow Winnipegger Beth Peterson, 10-3, in the final. Last year's champ Kristy McDonald fell to Kim Link in the quarterfinals, 7-4. The 20-team field featured rinks mostly from Manitoba.

Appleton Rum Cashspiel from Lower Sackville, NS (Sept 24-27)

Purse: $6400

Halifax's Theresa Breen won the first ever Appleton Rum Cashspiel. The 49-year-old beat Shannon Tatlock in the final, 5-1.

Morioka Ice Rink Memorial Cup from Morioka, Japan (Sept 21-23)

Purse: NA

Mizuki Kitaguchi defeated countrywoman Touri Koana, 7-6, in the inaugural Curling Champions Tour's Morioka Ice Rink Memorial Cup.

 

Men's Tour

Point Optical Curling Classic from Saskatoon, SK (Sept 25-28)

Purse: $41, 000

Winnipeg's Mike McEwen defended his title at the Point Optical Curling Classic in Saskatoon, SK Monday night by beating provincial rival Reid Carruthers in the final, 8-4. This marks the first victory of the season for the 35-year-old skip that ended up winning an incredible eight times on Tour in 2014-15.

Team McEwen, who fell to Carruthers in the Manitoba final last year, lost only once over the four day tournament, a 2-3 defeat to Saskatchewan's Steve Laycock in Draw 7. The foursome of McEwen, third B.J. Neufeld, second Matt Wozniak and lead Denni Neufeld beat American John Shuster, 5-2, in the quarterfinals, Olympic champion Brad Jacobs, 6-5, in the semis and Carruthers in the final. The 26-rink field featured the likes of Edmonton's Brendan Bottcher (5-3), Sweden's Niklas Edin (4-3), Toronto's John Epping (4-3) and Sven Michel (3-3) of Switzerland. 

KW Fall Classic from Kitchener-Waterloo, ON (Sept 24-27)

Purse: $9900

China's Rui Liu took home the KW Fall Classic this past weekend as his foursome went 6-2 over the four-day event and beat Ian Dickie in the final, 6-5. The 19-rink field featured teams mostly from Ontario. 

Mother Club Fall Curling Classic from Winnipeg, MB (Sept 24-27)

Purse: $10, 000

Winnipeg's David Bohn bettered Matt Dunstone in the final, 4-2. The 20-rink field was full of teams from Manitoba. Braden Calvert, who won the Canadian Junior Curling Championships the last two years, went 3-2 over the weekend and fell to Bohn, 7-6, in the quarters.

Appleton Rum Cashspiel from Lower Sackville, NS (Sept 24-27)

Purse: $8000

Brent MacDougall beat Jamie Danbrook, both from Nova Scotia, 5-3, in the final of the first-ever Appleton Rum Cashspiel.

Morioka Ice Rink Memorial Cup from Morioka, Japan (Sept 21-23)

Purse: NA

Junpei Kanda took care of Hiroshi Fukui, 8-1, in the final of this Curling Champions Tour event.
