Challenge de Curling de Gatineau from Gatineau, QC

Toronto's John Epping picked up his first event win of the season thanks to help from spare second Craig Savill. Savill, who is making his return to curling this season after he announced his cancer was in remission in early August, filled in for regular second Patrick Janssen in Quebec. Team Epping went a perfect 7-0 over the five-day event including beating Ottawa's Ryan McCrady in the quarter-final, 5-2, Greg Balsdon of Kingston in the semi-final, 6-5, and Canadian junior champ Matt Dunstone in the final, 4-3.  

Other notable rinks in the large 32-team field included Winnipeg's Jason Gunnlaugson (3-3, failed to make playoffs), Jean-Michel Menard playing in his hometown (4-3, failed to make playoffs) and Team Mark Nichols of St. John's who are still without their injured skipper Brad Gushue. The foursome lost to Dunstone in the semis, 8-3. Gushue, who has been out this season with a hip/groin injury, actually won this event last season.

 

Curling Masters Champery from Champery, Switzerland - CCT Event

Purse: $40,000 CHF

The Curling Champions Tour had another stop in Switzerland this weekend and a familiar team were the last ones standing once again. Skip Niklas Edin, third Oskar Eriksson, second Rasmus Wrana and lead Christoffer Sundgren won their second CCT event in Switzerland by going 7-1 at the Curling Masters Champery. Team Edin downed Czech Republic's David Sik in the quarters, 6-3, Steffen Walstad of Norway, 7-1, and the Swiss club led by Marc Pfister, 7-5, in the championship contest.

Team Edin, leaders of the WCT money list, also won the Stu Sell Oakville Tankard in September and the Swiss Basel Cup (on the CCT) in early October. 

The 24-rink field featured teams from Europe. James Grattan of New Brunswick was the defending champion at this event, but did not make the trip overseas. 

 

Medicine Hat Charity Classic from Medicine Hat, AB

Oct 21-24, 2016

Purse: $35,000

Jason Jacobson of Saskatoon topped Edmonton's Ted Appelman, 6-2, in the championship game from Medicine Hat. 

The field comprised of 24 rinks including defending champ Shaun Meachem, who lost in the quarters.

Canad Inns Women's Classic from Portage la Prairie, MB

Purse: $60,000

Team Rachel Homan is starting to roll as they prepare for the first Grand Slam event of the season next week. Skip Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Joanne Courtney and lead Lisa Weagle won the Canad Inns Women's Classic to pick up their second event win of the season. The Ottawa foursome lost their first game, but then reeled off eight straight wins including beating Shannon Birchard in the quarter-finals, 7-2, Anna Hasselborg in the semi-finals, 4-2, and Chiaki Matsumura in the final, 9-4.

Other notable names in the field included Jennifer Jones (lost in quarters), Krista McCarville (3-3, failed to make playoffs), Kerri Einarson (3-3, failed to make playoffs), Michelle Englot (4-3, failed to make playoffs), Tracy Fleury (lost in quarters), Stefanie Lawton (2-3, failed to make playoffs), Sherry Middaugh (4-3, failed to make playoffs), Bingyu Wang (lost in semis) and Silvana Tirinzoni (3-3, failed to make playoffs).     

Homan's crew already won an event this season in Cornwall at Shorty Jenkins Classic. 

 

Medicine Hat Charity Classic from Medicine Hat, AB

Oct 21-24, 2016

Purse: $24,000

Team Casey Scheidegger are having a great season on the World Curling Tour. The Lethbridge foursome of skip Scheidegger, third Cary-Anne McTaggart, second Jessie Scheidegger and lead Stephanie Enright picked up their third event win of the season this weekend at the Medicine Hat Charity Classic. They beat Regina's Breanne Meakin in the quarter-final, 8-3, Jessica Schultz of the United States, 5-3, in the semi-final and Nadine Chyz in the final, 8-2.

Team Scheidegger also won the HDF Insurance Shoot-Out in September and the Curlers Corner Autumn Gold Curling Classic in October.

The field featured 15 teams.

 

Lady Monctonian Invitational Spiel from Moncton, NB

Oct 21-23

Purse: $8800

Nova Scotia champion Jill Brothers defeated Robyn MacPhee of Charlottetown in the final, 5-3. This was their first event win of the 2016-17 season.
