NEW YORK, N.Y. - An independent review panel has denied the Vancouver Whitecaps' appeal to have a red card issued to midfielder Pedro Morales rescinded.

Major League Soccer said Thursday in a statement that a panel consisting of a representative from the U.S. Soccer Federation, a representative from the Canadian Soccer Association and a representative of the Professional Referees Organization were not unanimous that the referee had made a serious and obvious error in the sendoff.

Morales got in an altercation with San Jose's Adam Jahn in the 88th minute of Vancouver's 1-0 road loss to the Earthquakes on April 11. Both players were shown red cards.

The unsuccessful appeal means Morales, Vancouver's captain, will miss the Whitecaps' road match against Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The panel denied a Toronto FC appeal on a red card given to defender Justin Morrow earlier in the season.
