MEDICINE HAT, Alta. - Nick Merkley's goal late in the game held up as the winner as the Kelowna Rockets used a three-goal third period to blast the Medicine Hat Tigers 6-5 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Calvin Thurkauf and Tomas Soustal also scored for Kelowna (5-2-0) in the final 20 minutes of play. Tanner Wishnowski, Rourke Chartier and Justin Kirkland supplied the rest of the offence.

Trevor Cox scored twice for the Tigers (2-2-1) and Cole Sanford had a goal and two assists. James Hamblin and David Quenneville had the other goals.

Jackson Whistle made 33 saves for the Rockets.

Nick Schneider shouldered the loss, stopping 26-of-32 shots.

WHEAT KINGS 8 GIANTS 3

BRANDON, Man. — John Quenneville scored two goals and set up two more to pace the Wheat Kings past Vancouver.

Reid Duke also found the back of the net twice for Brandon (3-1-1). Jayce Hawryluk had a goal and four assists and Nolan Patrick and Braylon Shmyr also scored.

Carter Popoff scored twice for the Giants (3-1-1). Clayton Kirichenko had the other goal.

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Jordan Tkatch scored two goals, including an empty-netter with eight seconds to play, as the Raiders topped Kootenay.

Reid Gardiner had a goal and an assist for Prince Albert (4-1-0). Jesse Lees and Luke Coleman also scored.

Bryan Allbee, Austin Wellsby and Zac Zborosky scored for the Ice (1-4-0). Kootenay's Max Patterson was given a game misconduct 13:03 into the first period.

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Tyler Wong and Andrew Nielsen each scored two goals as the Hurricanes stormed past Red Deer.

Egor Babenko rounded out the offence for Lethbridge (3-2-0), which was 3 for 6 on the power play.

Brandon Hagel and Adam Musil had power-play goals for the Rebels (4-1-0).
