KENT, Wash. - Adam Helewka was the lone scorer in the shootout as the Spokane Chiefs edged the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Blair Oneschuk and Riley Whittingham scored in regulation time for Spokane (3-1-2), while Garret Hughson made 22 saves and turned away three skaters in the shootout for the win.

Mathew Barzal had a short-handed goal for Seattle (4-3-1) in the first period and Ryan Gropp also scored. Taran Kozun stopped 32 shots for the Thunderbirds.

The Chiefs scored on one of their three power plays, while Seattle went 0 for 2 on the man advantage.

ROYALS 6 REBELS 5 (OT)

RED DEER, Alta. — Tyler Soy scored 1:09 into overtime as Victoria slipped past the Rebels.

Axel Blomqvist scored with 57 seconds left in the third period to force extra time for the Royals (4-5-1). Austin Carroll had a goal and two assists, while Brandon Fushimi, Matthew Campese and Jack Walker chipped in as well.

Adam Musil, Scott Feser, Wyatt Johnson and Grayson Pawlenchuk helped Red Deer (3-5-1) build a 4-0 lead in the first period. Austin Strand's third-period goal gave the Rebels a short-lived 5-4 lead.
