The Minnesota Wild have signed defenceman Marco Scandella to a five-year, $20 million extension.

Scandella, 24, is in his fourth NHL season.

A native of Montreal, Scandella was taken 55th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft out of Val-d'Or of the QMJHL. He made his NHL debut in  2010.

His breakout campaign came last year when he three goals and 14 assists in 76 games played in just under 19 minutes a night.

A member of Canada's 2010 silver medal-winning entry in the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship, Scandella has five goals and three assists so far this season. He's averaging 21:37 of ice-time this season, 72nd among defencemen league-wide.
