Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was all smiles when leaving Pittsburgh following the 2012 NHL Draft. Cheveldayoff believes his team improved over the weekend with six new players added to their long-term depth chart.

Following Friday's first-round selection of Jacob Trouba (ninth overall), the Jets drafted Lukas Sutter, Scott Kosmachuk, Connor Hellebuyck, Ryan Olsen and Jamie Phillips on Saturday.

Sutter and Olsen played last season with the WHL's Saskatoon Blades.  Olsen however, is now a member of the Kelowna Rockets.

Kosmachuk is from the OHL's Guelph Storm.

Winnipeg also added depth in the crease with goaltenders Connor Hellebuyck and Jamie Phillips.

Hellebuyck played in the NAHL with Odessa while Phillips is with Toronto of the OJHL.

Saturday's biggest news for the Jets came via trade with Toronto in acquiring the rights to goaltender Jonas Gustavsson in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick in next year's NHL Draft.  The move gives Cheveldayoff options as Winnipeg continues to try and sign Ondrej Pavelec to a new contract.  Gustavsson becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1st.

Following the busy weekend, the club announced veteran forward Eric Fehr would not be returning.

Fehr, Michael Forney and John Negrin were not offered qualifying contracts as restricted free agents this afternoon.

Fehr, who hails from Winkler, Manitoba, had 2 goals and 1 assist in 35 games with the Jets this season.

Forney had 51 points in 53 ECHL games with Colorado and 2 AHL points between St. John's and Texas.

Negrin had 4 assists in 40 games in the AHL with Abbotsford and St. John's.  He also scored 1 goal and had 5 assists in 9 ECHL games with Utah.

Cheveldayoff also extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Evander Kane, Ondrej Pavelec, Spencer Machacek, Arturs Kulda, Paul Postma, Ben Maxwell, Brett Festerling and Kenndal McArdle.

A busy week continues for Jets management who are now attending American Hockey League meetings before NHL free agency opens July 1st.
