The Winnipeg Jets final game of the season was an interesting one at the MTS Centre on Thursday night.

Winnipeg was up 2-1 after the second period, and still alive in the chase for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. By the time they came out to start the third, the chase was over as the New York Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime and the Ottawa Senators also needed overtime to down the Washington Capitals.

With the Jets trying to maintain their focus under trying circumstances, the Montreal Canadiens scored three goals in the third period for the win.

A subdued Coach Claude Noel addressed the media post game, and as always was candid.

"I thought it was pretty much a two period game," Noel stated. "In the third I don't know what they knew or didn't know. We spent too much time in our zone.

"A lot of stuff in the first period was just silly plays. We never took advantage of power plays, especially early. It was kind of two different games."

The Jets 48 game stretch in 97 days has come to an end, and over the next few days this past season will be revisited, and also a look at what next year's team may look like.

Forward Blake Wheeler finished with 19 goals to lead the team in scoring, and despite the shortened season surpassed last year's goal total by two. Wheeler finished Thursday's game with five shots on goal.  Ondrej Pavelec tied a career high with his 13th straight start.

Winnipeg finished the year with a 24-21-3 record, including a 13-10-1 home record.
