The Winnipeg Goldeyes just keep on winning.

Wednesday night in Amarillo, Tex., the Goldeyes got two great starts from Matt Rusch and Alex Capaul and swept a doubleheader from the Amarillo Sox, 2-1 in the opener and 5-0 in the nightcap.

With the twin-bill sweep, the Goldeyes are now 6-0 on the season and counting last year's 6-0 sweep in the American Association playoffs have won a dozen straight ball games.

In Game 2 on Wednesday night, the Goldeyes recorded their second shutout of the season as Capaul worked five complete innings, allowing only four hits. He was picked up by Brendan Lafferty in the sixth and Wes Alsup in the seventh, both relievers pitched hitless and scoreless innings.

The Goldeyes scored two in the first and one each in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Red-hot Ryan Scoma drove in the winning run with a two-run double in the first.

Leonard Davis went two-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI that came on a leadoff solo home run in the fifth. Josh Mazzola went two-for-four with a run scored. Officially, Scoma was one-for-one with a run scored and two driven in. Scoma is now hitting .600.

“The guys got the hits in timely situations to win the first one and they kept it going in Game 2,” Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea told Paul Edmonds on the TSN 1290 post-game show. “We closed them out in the first game and then we came out hot and kept our foot on the gas in Game 2.”

Vermilyea was impressed with the team's performance, but he was particularly pleased with the efforts of Scoma and his pitchers.

“Ryan Scoma is a great, two-out, two-strike hitter,” Vermilyea said. “He waits to get his pitch and he hits it. That simple.

“Before the game I was thinking, ‘It would be great if we could get three or four innings from Alex (Capaul),' but he kept his pitch-count down and threw strikes. Then how about Wes Alsup in the ninth? Wow! He was throwing it up there at 95-97 miles per hour. He has rookie status. We're glad to have him.”

Capaul (1-0) got the win while Amarillo's Joe Newby (1-1) suffered the loss. There was no save.

Meanwhile, in the scheduled seven-inning Game 1, the Goldeyes got a tremendous start from Matt Rusch and scored their two runs on an RBI single in the sixth from Nick Liles and an RBI single in the eighth from Fehlandt Lentini. Then, they topped it off with another scoreless final inning from closer Patrick Keating.

Amarillo scored its only run in the first as K.C. Serna tripled and then scored an unearned run on an error by Goldeyes catcher Luis Alen.

Sox starter Jason Johnson held the Goldeyes scoreless through five innings, but in the sixth Nate Samson singled, went to second on a sacrifice by Amos Ramon and scored on a single by Liles. Then, in the eighth, Samson walked, went to second on a sacrifice by Ramon and scored on a single by Lentini.

Meanwhile, Rusch pitched seven complete innings allowing one unearned run on just three hits and picked up his second win of the season. Keating came on and picked up his second save of the year. He gave up two hits, but eventually struck out the side.

Liles went three-for-four and drove in a run, while Lentini went two-for-four with an RBI.

The Goldeyes immediately jumped on the bus and started heading north. They'll open a four-game series in Lincoln against the Saltdogs on Thursday night. Canadian left-hander Mark Hardy (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will pitch the first game of the series for the Fish.
