WINNIPEG -- Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Leo Lewis died on Friday at age 80, the team announced in a statement.

The "Lincoln Locomotive" -- nicknamed after playing for Lincoln University of Missouri -- won four Grey Cups with the Blue Bombers between 1955 to 1966. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1973.

"It is with deep sadness that we have to say goodbye to one of our great alumni, especially one of legendary stature like Leo Lewis," said Winnipeg acting CEO Wade Miller. "I remember my dad telling me stories of playing with Leo with Blue Bombers and what an amazing running back he was.

"He will forever remain one of the best players to ever suit up in Blue and Gold and our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time."

Lewis rushed for 8,861 yards during his 11-year career and was a six-time divisional all-star and a five-time recipient of the team's Most Outstanding Player award.

His career rushing yardage mark was a Blue Bomber record for 41 years until it was surpassed by Charles Roberts.
