Wang, Smeekens win WC 500m races; Canadians miss podium

ERFURT, Germany -- Wang Beixing of China won a women's 500-metre race for the second time in as many days at the speedskating World Cup on Saturday.

Wang clocked 38.15 seconds to beat Russia's Olga Fatkulina by 0.06 seconds. Dutch skater Thijsje Oenema was two thousandths of a second behind Fatkulina in third.

Anastasia Bucsis of Calgary finished 14th.

Olympic champion Lee Sang-hwa skipped the Erfurt meet but retains a comfortable lead in the standings with 800 points, followed by Germany's Jenny Wolf on 611 and American Heather Richardson on 530.

Dutchman Jan Smeekens claimed his fourth win of the season in the men's 500 to extend his lead in the standings over Japan's Joji Kato.

Smeekens beat Kato by one tenth of a second by clocking 35.06. Another Dutchman, Ronald Mulder, was third, 0.22 back.

Edmonton's Jamie Gregg and Gilmore Junio of Calgary were sixth and 13th, repsectively. Laurent Dubreuil of Levis, Que., was 15th followed by William Dutton of Humboldt, Sask. Alex Boisvert-Lacroix of Sherbrooke, Que., finished 18th.
