Another Friday afternoon deadline slipped past and it appears Tiger Woods is on the hook for a no-show fee at a hotel somewhere in Ponte Vedra, Fla.

For the second straight week, a predicted return to action for Woods failed to materialize as he was not among the entrants who confirmed for next week’s Players Championship by Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline.

Earlier reports indicated the former world No. 1 had booked accommodations for the tournament touted as the fifth major.

But if we take Tiger at his word, this delay in his return is really no surprise. Two weeks ago, he played five holes at the opening of one of his course designs, Bluejack National. He said it was the first full holes he’s played since undergoing two rounds of back surgery in six weeks last October.

So to go from that conservative start to two or possibly four rounds at TPC Sawgrass, one of the most brutally punishing courses on Tour, seemed a bit of a stretch, even for Woods who has won the Players twice.

So where will we see him in action again?

The same rumours that said he was dialing up Trivago for hotels in Ponte Vedra, Fla., stated he was doing the same in Columbus, Ohio, for the Memorial. That tournament is three weeks later. Woods has a good record there, winning five times with the last victory coming in 2012.

The logic would then follow that he would go from that tournament to the U.S. Open at Oakmont, a couple of weeks later.

But all of it is speculation. There’s a good chance Woods doesn’t even know when he’ll return to action. His only comment on the matter came in Las Vegas when he put on a demonstration at Tiger Jam, an annual fundraiser for the Tiger Woods Foundation. When asked when he was returning to action, his reply gave an indication that he is anxious to get back out there.

“Dude, if I could tell you, I would, because I'm sick and tired of being on the sidelines," said Woods. "I want to start competing against these boys. I miss it."

Woods last played on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship last August.
