Tiger Woods said on his website on Tuesday that he is "not physically ready to play" in the U.S. Open next week or the Quicken Loans National the following week.

The 40-year-old has not played on the PGA Tour since August after having two back surgeries last fall.

"I am making progress, but I'm not yet ready for tournament competition...I want to thank everyone for their continued support," Woods said on his website.

Woods did confirm that he will attend the Quicken Loans National, where he is the tournament's host at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

Some golf observers thought that Congressional might be the place where Woods would be his comeback - he made a return from back surgery in 2014 at the same event.

It's unknown if Woods will try to come back in time for the British Open and PGA Championship, which are both in July this year because of the Rio Olympics in August.
