Team Canada suffered a major blow in their opening game victory over Finland at the 2012 World Junior Championship, losing forward Devante Smith-Pelly for the remainder of the tournament.

Smith-Pelly suffered a fractured left foot in the second period of Canada's lopsided 8-1 win while blocking a shot. After trying to play another shift, he left the game and did not return.

The Anaheim Ducks' rookie right-winger is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

"Heartbreaking way to end my tournament, but I know the guys will do the country proud regardless. Thank you everyone for your kind words," said Smith-Pelly on his Twitter page.

The Scarborough, Ontario native had two goals in Canada's pre-tournament 7-1 victory over Switzerland and prior to his injury, was expected to be a major part of the Canadian attack.

In a warm-up victory over Finland, Smith-Pelly made his presence felt in a physical manner with several big checks.

As per tournament rules, only an injured goaltender can be replaced in the lineup by a non-roster player.

In 26 games played this season with the Ducks, Smith-Pelly has three goals and two assists. He, along with Brett Connolly, are the only two NHL players on the 2012 Canadian roster.
