Washington Capitals defenceman John Carlson will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if he doesn't sign an extension with the team by then.

And per his agent Rick Curran, Carlson is taking calls from interested teams with the interview period ahead of free agency now open.

"As of the moment we do not have a deal in place with Washington and as permitted, I am getting and taking calls from other interested team," Curran said, per TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie.

The 28-year-old Carlson had 15 goals and 53 assists in 82 games for the Capitals last season.

After Washington drafted Carlson in the first round in 2008, the Massachusetts native has 77 goals and 256 assists in 608 NHL goals, all with the Capitals.
