Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner has weighed in on comments in the Toronto Star from his agent, Darren Ferris, that the team was “lowballing him” in contract negotiations.

"Things get said, words get spun," Marner told reporters ahead of the team's game Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators. "I love it here. I grew up here. I want to be a Leaf for a long time. As long as I'm here for the next training camp, that's all that matters."

Ferris and the Toronto Star's Dave Feschuk clarified made in the story on TSN Radio 1050 and on Twitter on Wednesday.

Marner said he hasn’t read the reports and doesn’t want to be apprised of the situation until an extension is ready to be signed.

"That's why you hire an agent, let him talk to Kyle [Leafs GM Kyle Dubas]," Marner added. "A deal is going to get done eventually."

The Leafs completed a five-year, $58.17 extension for star centre Auston Matthews on Tuesday. Signing Marner is the team's next priority.

Marner is in the final year of his three-year entry-level contract and will become a restricted free agent on July 1. His camp has stated that they do not want to negotiate until the end of the season.
