It appears Detroit Red Wings forward Martin Frk will be hitting the open market on July 1, despite being scheduled to be a restricted free agent.

According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, the Red Wings have elected not give Frk a qualifying offer by the end of this week, meaning he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Frk, 24, scored 11 goals and posted 25 points in 68 games last season. He was scheduled to be arbitration eligible restricted free agent and was due at least 110 per cent of his $650,000 salary from this past season if qualified. St. James reports Frk's salary could have wound up at more than $715,000 if he went through arbitration and the Red Wings are unwilling to pay that.

St. James notes the Red Wings could still engage in contract talks with Frk, but points to the Dallas Stars as a potential landing spot.

According to St. James, the Red Wings will qualify fellow restricted free agents Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou and Tyler Bertuzzi
