The Minnesota Wild have announced that captain Mikko Koivu will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee. He is expected to have surgery to repair his knee on Friday.

Koivu was injured in Tuesday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres after a knee-on-knee collision with Sabres forward Tage Thompson in the first period. Koivu left the game and didn’t return.

This season, Koivu has 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 48 games. In 973 NHL games, he has 688 points. He named captain on Oct. 20, 2009.

Koivu, 35, was originally drafted by the Wild in the first round of the (sixth overall) of the 2001 NHL entry draft.

The Wild have recalled forward Joel Eriksson-Ek from the AHL’s Iowa Wild in the wake of Koivu’s injury. He has seven points in 36 NHL games this season and nine points in nine games in the AHL.
