GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Minnesota United has sent Canadian defender Callum Montgomery on loan to San Diego Loyal SC of the USL Championship for the remainder of the 2021 season.

The 24-year-old from Lantzville, B.C., came to Minnesota in a December trade from FC Dallas, which took Montgomery fourth in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. He previously had loan spells with North Texas SC of USL League One and San Antonio FC in the USL Championship.

Montgomery was part of Canada's roster at the CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship in March in Mexico. He was injured in the first game against El Salvador but returned to face Mexico in Canada's finale.

Montgomery, a left-sided centre back, played 73 games in four years for UNC-Charlotte. As a senior in 2018, he was the Conference USA defender of the year, a first team all-American and a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy awarded to the NCAA player of the year.

The San Diego Loyal are managed by former U.S. national team star Landon Donovan.
