Toronto rapper Drake is partnering up with NBA superstar LeBron James and businessman Maverick Carter as executive producers for the documentary Black Ice, which will explore the game of hockey’s racial reckoning and the experiences of Black players in the sport.

Oscar nominee Hubert Davis is set to direct the documentary that chronicles the systemic racism that Black players have faced and their marginalization throughout hockey’s history. The film carries the discussion from the original Colored Hockey League in the Maritimes to the present-day National Hockey League and its measly number of Black players.

“I think it is more important than ever before for all generations, particularly young people of colour, to understand and see the diverse faces who have contributed and shaped one of the essential fabrics of our country,” Davis said in a statement. Black Ice’s production has begun with Toronto Maple Leafs player Wayne Simmonds and Philadelphia Flyers prospect Zayde Wisdom taking part.

The SpringHill Company, founded by James and Carter, will executive produce alongside Drake and Adel “Future” Nur.  They will be joined by athletic empowerment brand Uninterrupted Canada as chief content officer Vinay Virmani will serve as a producer.

Black Ice will be available on Bell Media’s networks and streaming services such as TSN, CTV, and Crave.  Elevation Pictures holds the theatrical distribution rights to the upcoming film.
