Basketball icon Magic Johnson is reportedly shopping a “Last Dance”-style documentary about his life and career that has sparked an expensive bidding war amongst media companies.

Production company Submarine Entertainment has been shopping the rights to the documentary series, and according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, NBC’s streaming service Peacock is “in the lead” with an offer of $25 million on the table.

Film and television director Rick Famuyiwa is set to lead the project on Johnson’s counterpart to the critically-acclaimed documentary series “The Last Dance” that chronicled the legendary Michael Jordan’s life and career.

Johnson’s documentary, which was noted to be in the pre-production stages before Famuyiwa was hired, is set to dive deep into the Lakers superstar’s career both on and off the court, including in-depth interviews from his family, teammates, fellow NBA players, and Johnson himself.

Johnson has given production crews "unprecedented access" for the series, including "archival footage from his playing days” according to Dan Loumena of the Los Angeles Times.

Johnson first revealed in April 2020 that a documentary about his life would be made and premiere sometime this year.
