The May 5th super rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez has been called off after Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol, which his promoters blamed on contaminated meat.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez confirmed the news on a conference call.

The pair met in a highly anticipated fight last September that ended in split draw.

Alverez failed a volentary test last month, Golden Boy Promotions said the amount of clenbuterol in his system was consistent with meat contamination that has impacted athletes in Mexico and China.

"I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me," Alvarez said after failing the test. "I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail."

There is no word on a rescheduled date for the fight.
