Unai Emery's busy first summer as Arsenal manager continues with the team signing Uruguay defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria.

Torreira, 22, appeared in three matches for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup, including in their quarterfinal defeat to France.

"In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game," Emery said. "A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.?

A native of Fray Bentos, Torreira made his senior debut for Serie B side Pescara in 2015, signing for Sampdoria the following summer. After a year back on loan with Pescara, Torreira made his Serie A debut with Samp in the summer of 2016.

He made 38 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring four times.

Torreira becomes the club's fourth signing of the offseason, joining goalkeeper Bernd Leno and defenders Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos. France under-21 midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is expected to have a medical at the club in the coming days.

The Gunners open up their Premier League season on Aug. 12 away to champions Manchester City.
