Erik Karlsson is still an Ottawa Senator. But perhaps not for longer.

Trade talks surrounding the All-Star blueliner have been heating up all week and TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported on Thursday night that the Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning are working on a deal.

The Lightning, however, need cap room and according to Dreger, the New York Rangers could also be part of a deal involving former Blueshirt Ryan Callahan.

Karlsson, 27, has played nine seasons with the Senators. He had nine goals and 53 assists over 71 games last season in the nation's capital and has been a near point-per-game performer since his third season in the league.

Karlsson led the Sens to within one game of the Stanley Cup in 2016-17, but the club fell off dramatically and limped to a 28-43-11 record last season.

Following the season, general manager Pierre Dorion said he and Karlsson had a 30-minute meeting during exit interviews, which was the longest session he had with any player. Dorion and owner Eugene Melnyk also said the club would offer Karlsson an extension on July 1 when the club was able to.

He has one year left on a seven-year, $45.5 million contract he signed ahead of the 2012-13 season and has a $6.5 million AAV against the cap next season.
