EJ Manuel's roster spot on the Buffalo Bills is safe, at least according to his offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Speaking Tuesday, Roman told the Buffalo News the speculation Manuel could be cut in training camp if he struggles to pick up the Bills' new system is simply that – speculation.

"I don't remember ever saying that and that's the furthest thing from the truth. I mean, he's busting his hump every day and doing a very good job," Roman said.

The former 49ers offensive coordinator who joined Rex Ryan's staff in the offseason did, however, allude to the 2013 first-round pick still being a work in progress.

"There's a lot of clay to mold there as well," Roman added, "so whatever people are talking about, I don't know where that's coming from. But the answer is, no, he's doing a good job."

Manuel opened the 2014 season  as the Bills starter, but was benched in favour of veteran Kyle Orton after four weeks. In his four starts, he threw for 838 yards with five touchdowns, three interceptions and a completion rate of 58 per cent. The Bills went 2-2.

Orton retired after the season, but the Bills acquired Matt Cassel from the Minnesota Vikings shortly after Orton's announcement.

Roman echoed Ryan's offseason sentiment of an open quarterback competition on Tuesday. In addition to Manuel and Cassel, Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor will also receive first-team reps when the Bills open OTAs on May 26.

"Honestly, it's anybody's job to take," Roman said. "Anybody."

Of the three, Cassel is widely viewed as the favourite to start Week 1 when the Bills open their season against the Indianapolis Colts.

Cassel opened the 2014 season as the Minnesota Vikings starter and played three games before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Taylor spent his previous four seasons in Baltimore after being drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2011 Draft. He has never started an NFL game.

Tuel started one games for the Bills in the 2013, throwing for 229 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a losing effort.

The Bills retooled their offence this offseason with the additions of LeSean McCoy, Percy Harvin and Charles Clay.
