The Vancouver Canucks placed forward Anton Rodin on unconditional waivers on Monday for the purpose of releasing him from his contract.

In a statement released Monday, Canucks general manager Jim Benning said Rodin asked for his release.

"Anton asked to be released from his contract," Benning said. "We value the skill and depth he adds to our team but ultimately it was important to respect Anton's request to move on."

Rodin, 26, was a second-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2009. He owns one goal and one assist in seven games with the AHL's Utica Comets this season.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Rodin appeared in three games with the Canucks last season, posting one assist.
