TORONTO - Pinch hitter Russell Martin drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays slipped past the New York Yankees 3-1 on Monday.

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (1-3) pitched eight innings for Toronto (13-14), giving up one run on three hits and three walks. Third baseman Josh Donaldson went 2 for 4, scoring one run for the Blue Jays. Brett Cecil earned the save.

Starter Chase Whitley (1-0) struck out six over six shut-out innings for New York (16-10). He allowed six Toronto hits as the Yankees held on to a 1-0 lead for eight innings.

It was a tight game for the first six innings of play.

The biggest threat to break the scoreless tie came in the third when Blue Jays right-fielder Ezequiel Carrera was stranded on third base. He'd laid down a bunt and reached first safely when Whitley's throw went well wide of Garrett Jones's outstretched glove, allowing Carrera to make it to third.

Jones drove in Carlos Beltran in the seventh inning for the first run of the game. Beltran had gotten on base with a double to start the inning, then moved to third on Stephen Drew's groundout to first. Jones then grounded out to first, giving Beltran time to cross home for a 1-0 Yankees lead.

Encarnacion tied the game 1-1 for Toronto in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out double. That plated Donaldson and advanced Jose Bautista to third.

Kevin Pillar then hit an infield fly before Martin hit a single up the third-base line to drive in Bautista. Encarnacion crossed home on an error on the same play to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

Martin moved to second on a stolen base before Danny Valencia struck out to end the threat.

Cecil then induced an Alex Rodriguez fly out, struck out pinch hitter Chris Young and forced pinch hitter Gregorio Petit to ground out to shortstop for the save.

Notes: The Blue Jays honoured Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Fanning with a moment of silence before the game. Fanning died on April 25 at age 87. He played for the Chicago Cubs from 1954-57 and managed the Montreal Expos 1981-82 and 1984, becoming a Canadian citizen in 2012. ... Announced attendance was 19,217.
