East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Running back David Wilson, the New York Giants' first-round pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, was officially waived by the team Wednesday with his career having been cut short by a neck injury.

Wilson sustained the injury during a game against Philadelphia on Oct. 6, 2013 and has not played since. He spent the entire 2014 season on injured reserve after failing to receive medical clearance.

The move was made to clear a roster spot for center Brett Jones, whom the Giants signed after a successful two-year stint with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders.

Wilson rushed for 504 yards and five touchdowns over 21 overall games with the Giants, but made his biggest impact as a return man. The Virginia Tech product set a club record with 1,533 kick return yards, highlighted by a 97-yard touchdown against New Orleans, as a rookie in 2012.

Jones was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Lineman in 2014 and helped the Stampders to a Grey Cup championship this past season. The 23-year-old Saskatchewan native was selected as the league's Most Outstanding Rookie the previous year.
